This book makes it easy for you to master the essentials of DB2 programming. Written from the programmer's point of view, it focuses right from the start on what you need to know to access and process DB2 data in your application programs using embedded SQL
You'll learn: the basics of how DB2 works so you can program more easily and logically...how to design and code DB2 programs...how to use inner joins, outer joins, and unions to combine data from two or more tables...how to use column functions to extract summary data from a table...how to work with variable-length data and nulls...how to use error handling techniques and ROLLBACK to protect DB2 data...how to use locking and concurrency features so you don't tie up the who le system...how to develop DB2 programs interactively (using DB2I, a TSO facility) or in batch...how to create test data using SPUFI and QMF...and more!

"Cram-packed with useful information and explained in such a way that the information fairly leaps off the page, Garvin, Eckols and Murach have done it again - 'DB2, Part 1' is another grand-slam winner." -- COBOL World Online, Feb. 1999
Another one of Mike Murach's outstanding books
When I accepted a position with Mike Murach & Associates in February 1998, I was quite apprehensive. You see, I was very comfortable designing and coding COBOL programs using DB2, IMS, and even IDMS. I was fortunate to have a wide range of career challenges in my fourteen years of experience on IBM mainframes, including 1 ½ years as a Systems Programmer in a small shop where I held the responsibilities of DB2 and IDMS DBA. So, why the career change?
In November 1997, I ordered some books from Mike Murach & Associates for some colleagues of mine (at that time I was working as a contract programmer for a large telephone company on the West Coast). My colleagues were new to MVS, TSO, VSAM, CICS, and DB2. So, I recommended most of Mike’s books. I felt comfortable making the recommendations as I had invested in 18 of Mike’s books to bolster my career. The only books I couldn’t recommend were the DB2 books, because they were written when DB2 version 2.2 was current and the project we were supporting used DB2 version 4.1.
Since Mike’s office is only 1.2 miles from my house, I decided to pick the books up instead of having them shipped. While I was there, Mike invited me into his office for a chat. A few hours later, I had convinced him that his DB2 series needed to be updated, and he had convinced me that I was the right person to do it. With my working knowledge of DB2 and Mike’s proven writing style, we made an excellent team. And, DB2 for the COBOL programmer, Part 1, second edition is the result.
By the way, if you have any of Mike’s other mainframe books, you’ll notice that we’ve changed the layout. That is, all of the text is on the left-hand side of the page and the figures for that text are on the right-hand side of the page. This eliminates the page-flipping that often occurs in technical books.
Part 1 of this series is designed to give a COBOL programmer all the tools you’ll need to become a solid DB2 COBOL programmer. Soon, Part 2 will be revised to include DB2 version 4.1 and 5.0. Part 2 of this series is designed to take that solid DB2 COBOL programmer to the next lever – a Senior DB2 COBOL programmer.
