About the Author
Andrew Bakun is currently a Professor of Marine Biology and Fisheries at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. His professional career in ocean science spans a full 50 years, during which he has worked within a variety of national, international agencies and private academic institutions, having in the early 1960s spent more two years on the International Indian Ocean Expedition and later having worked 22 years for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 7 years for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2 years with the French governmental scientific agency, IRD, and a year with the International Research Institute for Climate Prediction at Columbia University, before finally taking up his current professorship in Miami. During his U.S. Government career he served nine years (1983-92) as Director of the NOAA-NMFS Pacific Fisheries Environmental Laboratory, in Monterey California. His special research interests have included climatic effects on the population dynamics of exploited fish populations and the ecology and function of small pelagic fishes in upwelling ecosystems. He has served on numerous international and national scientific advisory panels (for example, he served as Chairman of the Scientific Guiding Group for the international IOC/FAO/SCOR Program of Ocean Science and Living Resources for its entire duration, 1984-1994) and has written extensively on fisheries, oceanography and marine ecology.
