Synopsis
Washington Irving’s classic 1819 story of a hapless Dutchman in colonial New York who wanders off into New York’s wild Catskill Mountains, meets supernatural beings and falls asleep for twenty years after drinking a magic potion offered by his ghostly hosts. He wakes after the American Revolution to find himself an old man in a new country. Illustrated with 33 drawings by N.C. Wyeth and the painting Rip Van Winkle Leaving Home by A.D.O Browere, and with brief biographical essays on Wyeth and Irving, an essay on the Catskills by Irving’s pseudonym Dietrich Knickerbocker, and an historical introduction by Mountain Top Historical Society president emeritus Justine Hommel.

About the Author
Washington Irving (1783–1859) was the United States’ first internationally celebrated literary figure and has been credited for initiating the short story format in America, largely thanks to such tales as “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” both of which first appeared in his immensely successful book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. (1819–1820). His literary out put was prodigious and included satires, travelogues, histories and biographies, and he also had a second career in diplomacy, serving overseas in various capacities including as minister to Spain.
