Synopsis

Spring is the first and only journal of archetype and culture. First published in 1941, it has rapidly expanded in recent years under the brilliant combined editorship of James Hillman and Charles Boer. On the shelves of every great library in the world, Spring Journal continues to define what is and what isn't in the world of archetypal and Jungian psychology and the new post-Jungian scholarship. This year's issue is devoted to Robert Duncan (1919-1988), the wild-eyed San Francisco poet who combined extreme elegance with unremitting consciousness. In 1983, he addressed a convention of archetypal psychologists in Buffalo with a brilliant and spontaneous monologue called, Opening the Dreamway, in which he took on Jung, Freud, the Greeks, Bachelard, gods and goddesses and most of all the work of James Hillman, as seen from the extraordinary perspective of a major poet. The talk is being printed here for the first time in its entirety, alongside Nor Hall's study of Jess, the distinguished painter with whom Duncan lived most of his life. There are articles, too by James Hillman, Ginette Paris, Michael Adams and others.
