Synopsis

Curator Keizo Yukawa flees a dead-end job in Tokyo to head a new museum devoted to 365 paintings of Mt. Fuji - one for each day of the year - by the eccentric genius Takenoko. Takenoko died a hundred years ago, but his legacy of madness infects each member of the Ono family, who own the Views but disagree about almost everything. Yukawa's manipulation by the Onos and his fascination with an algorithmically controlled daughter lead to many strange happenings and his ultimate disintegration. Threadlike character "bytes" and hundreds of Hokusai-inspired illustrations suggest the nonlinear world below the high-tech veneer of a modern Japan that is increasingly, dangerously fragmented.

From the Author

A Hokusai-inspired story
Hokusai, a Japanese artist, inspired this story of intrigue, philosophy, and art in modern Japan. Takenoko, a fictional artist in the story, lived during the 19th century, and was one of the last "ukiyo-e" artists ("pictures of the floating world"), and was famous for his works of Mt. Fuji, completed one a day for a year. His descendants, the Ono family, have inherited pieces of his genius as well as his obsessive madness, and thus are unbalanced in their own way. An unsuspecting curator, Yukawa, is thrust into their lives, as he tries to bring together Takenoko's works in a museum dedicated to the artist. The book was originally planned as a CD-ROM project, and its unique design and layout reflect the links of the characters lives to the past. The book contains over 400 illustrations, each inspired by Hokusai's work: "One Hundred Views of Mt. Fuji." END
