It presents the bone marrow-bone marrow stroma and its circulating progeny as an integrated organ system that is regulated by a series of stimulatory and inhibitory cytokines and is prone to failure after severe burns, trauma, or sepsis. At the cellular level it describes the molecular and biochemical events that define both normal and abnormal neutrophil function. It summarizes alterations in myelopoiesis and mature phagocyte function that accompany major thermal injuries.
