Belled Buzzards, Hucksters & Grieving Spectres: Strange & True Tales of the Appalachian Mountains - Softcover

9781878086280: Belled Buzzards, Hucksters & Grieving Spectres: Strange & True Tales of the Appalachian Mountains

From the Author

Unusual people, strange places, hangings, folktales.
A good deal of this material is from my childhood. I grew up hearing about hangings as social events, haunted mills, legendary bears and Cherokee legends. I've always liked tales that are a little quirky and/or bizarre.

Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ issued. Second printing [stated]. [8], 208 pages. Illustrations. Signed with sentiment on the title page by the author (Carden). Reads Gary Carden Blow the Tannery Whistle! Gary Carden was raised by his grandparents in a cove that's now within the city limits of Sylva, and here he heard stories-funny, frightening, instructive, and just plain peculiar-about generations of family and neighbors, and legendary heroes. After a career that included years as a literature and drama teacher, Carden is now a full-time storyteller. He is the author of Mason Jars in the Flood, a collection of stories which won the Appalachian Writers Association Book of the Year prize. Carden's earlier collection of stories, Belled Buzzards, Hucksters and Grieving Spirits, was co-authored with Nina Anderson. He was the narrator of and "chief inspiration," for the 2005 PBS documentary Mountain Talk, and collaborated with Tom Davenport on From the Brothers Grimm: A Contemporary Retelling of American Folktales and Classic Stories. Carden is also an award-winning playwright whose works have been produced throughout the South and across the country. His plays, including The Raindrop Waltz, Land's End, and Birdell are based upon his stories. His play The Prince of Dark Corners is based on the life of the outlaw Major Lewis Redmond and is now a film featured on PBS. Carden's play, Outlander, is about the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and premiered at the Parkway Playhouse in 2012. He received is the 2006 Brown-Hudson Award from the North Carolina Folklore Society and the 2012 North Carolina Award for Literature. The Southern Appalachian Mountains have forever been a region of mystery, wonder and legend. And in their isolation, it was only natural that the people who inhabited this rugged and beautiful land would treasure story telling. Collected here are stories that mountain people have told and retold for generations - stories of ghosts and belled buzzards that foretell death; stories of murders and hangings, of strange happenings and humorous events; stories, too, of some of the remarkable people these mountains have produced. Most of these stories are true; some are legendary - but all are enthralling. --- from book's back cover. Seller Inventory # 84684
