Peter Olds was born in Christchurch in 1944 and educated in Auckland. He left school at 16 and worked variously as a window-dresser, cook, wool store labourer and hospital orderly. After meeting James K. Baxter in Dunedin in the mid-1960s his interest in song-writing switched to poetry. He worked for a while with Patrick Carey at the Globe Theatre in London Street, including writing a one-act play and having it produced and performed. Although drawing was Old's first love, writing became the main activity in his life from the late 1960s on. After suffering a breakdown he joined Baxter at his commune in Jerusalem on the Wanganui River for a few months' recovery, before returning to Dunedin to take up writing full time. In 1978 he was awarded the Robert Burns Fellowship at the University of Otago. Peter continues to live in Dunedin.
