World War I - 1914-1918. The war to end all wars. 1916 - Delville Wood, that most famous battle fought by South African soldiers in France brought home the real tragedy of the World War I experience. But, because Delville Wood was the first scene of action for South Africa, history has tended to overlook other places and events that were, for the South African Brigade, of far greater significance in terms of achievement and sacrifice. In the broad sweep of the conflict, Delville Wood must take its place as a modest part of the courage of the Springboks from Libya to France and Belgium. This book is the personal story of the 1st South African Brigade on the Western Front during World War I. On this "front of all fronts", as it was called by the millions of men who lived and died in the mud of trench warfare, South Africans were present. Nearly 4500 of the South African Brigade were never to return from that front alone.
