Synopsis
Think of Football today and the chances are that you will think of Soccer, or to give the game its full title, Association Football. So common is that view that today there is no need to explain what type of football is played in the Football League. One hundred years ago that was not the case. Before the First World War, the word football was a broad term which covered both the Association and Rugby Union games. This history of the early years of English football describes how and why the game split and what forces helped shape Soccer and Rugby as we know them today.
