This work is part of the Lecture Notes series, which is intended primarily for the undergraduate law degree or common professional examination student. It is also intended to be useful to other students studying law as part of their course. The books provide valuable assistance to those who need clear but thorough treatment of law subjects, incorporating recent developments and proposals for reform as appropriate. The treatment of each subject is precise but comprehensive. The material in the books is presented logically, starting with the basic issues of each topic and moving on to more refined matters. At the end of each chapter, the issues discussed in that chapter, together with relevant cases and statutes, are summarized on one perforated sheet. This enables the reader to file the summary sheet for easy access during subsequent revision. Each book also contains full footnote references and a recommended reading list. This particular work presents a concise but critical analysis of the legal protection of civil liberties in the United Kingdom. While providing a wide treatment, it focuses on areas of particular academic interest in order to provide students with a clear insight into the underlying themes in this area.

SECOND YEAR UNDERGRADUATE
"This is an excellent series, which hits the target at a remarkable number of levels. The clarity of its reference points makes it ideal for students new to undergraduate study, while at the same time being the perfect ‘refresher’ book for students about to start on professional courses. More than that, the series is great as a ‘starter pack’ for non-specialist students covering elements of law as part of their wider studies, and invaluable for teaching international students studying the English common law from abroad."

Civil Rights- New Labour, Freedom and the Human Rights Act
Law in Focus Series
Series Editor- Professor Keith Ewing, King's College, London
This exciting new book in the Law in Focus Series centres on those areas of domestic civil liberties and human rights that are directly affected by the powers of state agents, mainly the police and the security and intelligence services. It examines the probable impact of the Human Rights Act on those powers, focusing especially on New Labour's own legislative programme. New Labour has put into place a new and very extensive legislative framework for counter terrorism and state surveillance, in the shape of the Terrorism Act 2000 and the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. The author analyses the record of the Conservative Governments from 1979 to 1997 in those areas and compares it with the stance taken by the New Labour Government. In addition, the author considers the potentially immense effect in those areas of the Human Rights Act 1998, now fully in force. The author argues that although the Human Rights Act is New Labour legislation it is, ironically, likely to be used to temper the excesses of New Labour's 'state power' scheme.
This critical and challenging book-
· Analyses the extensive counter-terrorism provisions of the Terrorism Act 2000
· Examines the provisions of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 - the most comprehensive state surveillance scheme ever introduced by a UK government
· Considers key civil liberties issues currently arising from the powers of state agents
· Analyses the impact of the HRA 1998 on the established and the new legislation
· Reflects on New Labour's position on civil liberties and human rights
