It starts by introducing the mouse and showing how to use it. Then, to boost confidence with the Windows interface, it covers subjects such as use of the Start menu, resizing windows, scrolling, how toolbars work, managing files and folders and shutting down Windows 98. Things start to get a bit more detailed after that, with introductions to various Windows 98 tasks and applications like using Outlook Express, Web browsing, printing, and finally, customising the desktop and using the system tools to ensure maximum performance.

Windows 98 in easy steps, by Harshad Kotecha, manages to provide a thorough overview of the OS to ensure beginners do not feel out of their depth....it succeeds in explaining all the basics without patronising the reader.

Every aspect of Windows 98 is dealt with in just the right amount of detail, from first steps through file management, printing, networking, Web publishing and reading and sending e-mail, to customising Windows 98 and using the system tools. Jargon is scrupulously avoided and Microsoft's sometimes over complex terminology is demystified wherever possible.

Each topic is afforded between one and three pages, all of them heavily illustrated with annotated screenshots. Points to remember, potential problems and handy tips are offered down the sides of the pages and are highlighted using simple icons.

The copious use of screenshots fits well with the informative but informal style of Kotecha's writing, making this a highly readable book which is also extremely easy to dip into. Thank to the detailed contents pages and thorough index, the book will serve as a handy reference tool as well as a guidebook which newcomers can work through.
