The introduction of new syllabuses for 'A' level and 'AS' level examinations from September 1995, based on the revised subject core from SCAA, provided the impetus for many languages teachers to re-evaluate and revise their teaching. The syllabuses are designed to achieve a natural progression from GCSE. They contain three elements: knowledge and understanding; concepts and skills; and assessment objectives. Permeating all three parts of the core are the complementary elements of knowledge of contemporary society and linguistic competence. Other aspects of the examinations themselves also have significant implications for teachers: almost all questions are to be answered in the target language; there is greater emphasis on the transfer of meaning and the integration of the four skills; there is a choice of assessment mode - coursework, modular or terminal. This text brings together contributions from speakers at a CILT conference on the teaching of languages to 'A' and 'AS' levels. The conference addressed issues around one central theme - how can teachers help their students to achieve their full potential?
The book, therefore, offers reflections and tried-and-tested ideas from teachers who are working with 'A' and 'AS' level students. The contributions provide a bank of examples and suggestions which can be adapted to suit the needs of both teacher and learner."synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
