This introductory text describes both the features of computers and the ways and means of using them, so as to provide a basis for understanding the impact of computers on individuals, organizations and society. The book is divided into eight sections: using computers; applications; data and programs; hardware features and uses; how the computer works; software and programming; further applications; and computers in perspective. Four appendices contain revision test questions and answers, course work, assignments and projects, and details omitted from the text in the interests of clarity. This fourth edition reflects the continued shift of emphasis towards applications of computers, particularly applications packages, and the features and usage of small desk-top and lap-top computers. This text is suitable for students taking examinations equivalent to GCSE computer studies, and also for certain BTEC and CGLI courses.
