Synopsis
On the morning of Wednesday 11th August 1999, a total eclipse of the Sun will be visible from the South-Western part of the UK mainland, the Scilly Isles and the Channel Islands lasting up to 2 minutes. Furthermore, the entire country will experience a partial eclipse in what will be a huge event precipitated by much media coverage. To prepare for such a spectacle, an outline of what an eclipse is and a study of this phenomena throughout history are provided. Lunar and solar eclipse in this historical context have had variant effect upon the peoples who have witnessed them, and these traditions are discussed as well as the modern outlook that touches upon astrology and the millennium. A guide to safe observation of the phenomena, together with the best viewing sites and recording techniques are also covered.
