Tom's time is up: the year and a day have passed, and Nick, now disclosed as the Devil's agent, will settle for nothing less than Tom's soul. He has to kill himself on the stroke of midnight. Totally dispairing, and done with wishes, Tom accepts Nick's invitation to a game of cards: Shadow will cut three, and Tom must guess them. After two correct calls, the third is cut: Anne's voice calls 'Return O Love'. Tom names the Queen of Hearts and swoons as Nick is defeated - and then returns to Hell, but only after condemning Tom to insanity.
