Claude Rogers was an important figure for five decades, both as a painter and as a teacher of art. In 1937, with Victor Pasmore and William Coldstream, he founded the Euston Road School of Drawing and Painting which has had a considerable influence on the development of British figurative painting. The influence of the School, which was closed down by the outbreak of war, continued when the Euston Road painters regrouped at Camberwell in the late 1940s. Rogers excelled as a teacher at the Slade in the 1950s and in 1962 became Professor of Fine Art at Reading University.
In his own painting, Rogers pursued a rigorous realism based on visual fact. He searched for the more visual aspects of familiar subjects and he enjoyed attempting to paint the 'unpaintable' - emergency hospital cases, burning stubble fields, landscapes rushing past beneath aeroplane wings.
In this first biography of Rogers' life and work Jenny Pery has used much unpublished source material from the painter's own notes and diaries, as well as reminiscences from friends and colleagues, to create the picture of an ebullient, dedicated and inventive artist who believed passionately in art as a vital ingredient in the life of human beings.
