Seller: HORSE BOOKS PLUS LLC, Boston, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition hardcover in black paper covered boards with sharp tips and lightly bumped spine ends. No names, tears or soil in the tight, crisp 176pp text. 15 glossy color plate reproductions of Vanity Fair portraits of Archer's contemporaries throughout, a forward by Lester Piggott and a 4pp appendix of Archer's racing accomplishments in the rear. Original, un-clipped color illustrated dust wrapper has some repaired scratches but is complete and displays well in new mylar. Fred Archer reigned over the English Turf from 1874, when he was seventeen until his death in 1886. In his day only two others are comparable to him, Sir Gordon Richards and Lester Piggott. However, he also had powerful and deadly enemies - there were accusations of professional misconduct which cost him rides, friends and peace of mind. John Welcome brilliantly vindicates Archer and brings him and the Victorian racing scene triumphantly to life. Many people regard the earlier edition of this book as the greatest biography of a jockey ever written. An enormous amount of work went into the first edition and over the last twenty years John Welcome has continued to update and correct his magnum opus. Seller Inventory # 51458
