Synopsis
Michael Melvin has filled a gap in history by providing a comprehensive and much needed account of the role played by the Motor Minesweeper in World War II. Blissfully unaware of what was happening in the corridors of power, the officers and men who manned these little ships displayed, despite the odds, professionalism and courage of the highest degree. For them there were no heroics, simply the never- ending slog of day-to-day watchfulness, trying not to think that the next mine to explode might be underneath the keel of the ship on which they stood. MINESWEEPER can tell only part of the story of the minesweeping activities of the War, but it does explain in a way not previously told, the trials, tribulations and indeed the frustrations along with the successes, and some of the lighter moments which arose as a result of seeking to combat not only the magnetic mine, but other types used by the enemy, whose aim was to demoralise and subsequently defeat the allies.
