Synopsis

This concise encyclopedia provides information on nearly 400 separate Native American peoples, from the Canadian Arctic to the Rio Grande, and identifies scores of other minor groups within the main entries. The text is organized logically for the student and interested layman with major chapters on the main cultural and geographical areas for example the northeast woodlands, southeast woodlands, plains and prairie, plateau, Great Basin, southwest, northwest coast, subArctic and Arctic. Within each chapter the tribes are grouped into language families, with an introductory section illustrating the latest theories on language classification with straightforward tables showing kinship. Each tribal entry gives the historical location and subsequent wanderings of each tribe, an outline of its material and spiritual culture, milestones in the history of its contact with the white man, notes on the degree to which identity and culture survive and the present day locations and populations. Entry subjects range from major nations which have survived with tens of thousands of members, to long-extinct groups of a few dozen only.
