This is a new edition, not a facsimile, it has been re-set, of a polemical work first published in 1634, which contrasted Alfred the Great with the government of Charles I. It is actually the earliest modern account of Alfred. Spelman’s Life was not published till 1678. The idea that Alfred was a founder of the University of Oxford is a popular medieval myth, but that is not the only bizarre aspect to this book, which offers a laudatory comparison between Alfred the Great and Charles I. The work includes a modern introduction by Francis Wilson and bibliographical notes by Shaun Tyas. Two original copies of the book were examined to check the careful resetting of the text.
