Written by a Swedish working group of ten members and distributed for comments to all major hearing centres and audiological institutions in Sweden, the methods described in this book are founded on an extensive knowledge and experience that should provide a good basis for improved audiometric testing. The selection of the methods included in this book was based on the principle of including all established tests that can be described by a uniquely defined test procedure and that use commonly available test equipment. The description of each test is as complete as possible and is structured in seven parts: purpose, patient, procedure, marking, comments, technical equipment and references. Wherever applicable, recommendations from international standards produced by the International Standards Organisation Technical Committee 43 Acoustics and the International Electrotechnical Commission TC29 Electroacoustics have been followed. The book will be of interest to clinicians, trainee audiologists and assistants, technical audiologists and audiological physicians.

This book has been producted by a Swedish working group of ten people with solid professional experience as audiology assistants, technicians and physicians. The task set by the working group to provide details practical descriptions of how to perform all kinds of hearing tests, so as to inform the training and practice of those using audiometry in their work. The text was discussed, redrafted and sent out to audiological clinics, hearing centres and other relevant institutes. Where possible, the comments and recommendations received were incorporated in the final manuscript. This English version of the Swedish text follows the original in all essential aspects, but has been adjusted to avoid specific national conditions.
The book leads the reader from the general prerequisites for audiometry through particular tests, grouped together under a type: psychoacoustic and electro–physiological tests, audiometry with children and impedance audiometry: to explanations of the audiograms, symbols, terms and abbreviations used. The description of each test includes its purpose, the patients for whom it is applicable, the step–by–step procedure, specifications of the equipment and test environment, recording of results and comments and references for additional information.
