Synopsis

This volume of papers, heard at the first Cardiff conference on the theory of translation in the Middle Ages, is designed to complement an earlier volume of papers from the same conference. It includes papers not only on Middle English translations of romance and religious writing, and Chaucer's "Troilus", but also on translations into other medieval vernaculars - French, German, Swedish, Welsh and Spanish. Several papers consider the circumstances in which translations were produced, whether monastic scriptorium or royal court, and two provide an overview of translation activity in Toledo and Wales. Underpinning this variety is the clear, and frequently stated, conviction that translation is not at all inferior to "original" writing, and is well worth serious study.
