Synopsis
Written for both casual and serious shell collectors, this guide focuses on the essentials of shell identification in southern Africa, presenting 262 species that are most likely to be seen in the region. The authors discuss shell taxonomy, shell structure and the various habitats in which shells are most commonly found; highlight diagnostic features or combinations of features that will most easily enable the collector or enthusiast to identify shells and advise readers as to where and how to collect shells and how to build a shell collection. The text for each species is accompanied photographically and the text details shell description, colour, habitat and diet and supplies notes on related topics such as subspecies, exploitation and other names.

About the Author
Douw Steyn has been collecting shells for the past 15 years in South Africa, and is well known among local shell collectors. A retired veterinary surgeon, he is senior author of the comprehensive book Marine Shells of Southern Africa. Together with his wife Elise, Douw Steyn has also authored Sea Shells of Jeffreys Bay, and Struik's Sasol First Field Guide to Shells of Southern Africa.
