This story tells of the battles between the Australian and Japanese at Milne Bay, Buna and Sanananda in the extreme east of Papua New Guinea in the second half of 1942 and early 1943. The story starts with the invasion by the Japanese at Milne Bay in August 1942 and the desperate defence by the Australian 7th Brigade. This is followed by the 18th Brigade's advance against the Japanese in what was the first Japanese defeat on land in the Pacific War. Finally, it tells the story of the Australian's capture of Japanese positions at Buna and Sanananda on the northern beach-heads of Papua New Guinea. This is a history of these battles told through the official records of those campaigns but more particularly through the recollections of the survivors.
