Dimmey's genesis can be traced to a small Richmond drapery opened by Joseph Britten in 1853. In the 1890s a Marlborough firm called Dimelow and Gaylard purchased Britten's business and soon became a leading Swan Street retailer. The firm was known affectionately as 'Dimrneys' - a nickname that eventually stuck.

Samuel Furphy is a freelance historian and a graduate of the University of Melbourne's History Department. His research and teaching focussed on Australian history, British colonialism and 20" century world history. Meanwhile, he has worked on various public history projects as a researcher and writer. This is his second company history.
