In December 1993, the Audit Commission published a national report "Protecting the Public Purse". The report examined fraud and corruption in local government and set out good practice for the prevention and detection of fraud. It made a number of recommendations for local and central government as well as police organizations. The results showed a positive response. This update reports that councils have found over #300 million of fraud during this period, that numbers of staff investigating fraud cases have trebled and DSS agencies and councils are working with the Benefit Fraud Inspectorate to improve benefit administration and counter fraud work.
