Synopsis
Atchison's proposal in 1980 to use log-ratios in compositional data analysis led to the notion of building from "natural geometry," a geometry that is coherent with the intuitive concept of difference associated with the particular type of data. This collection of papers reflects the state of the art in this rapidly expanding field while emphasizing practical applications and relevant software. Topics include case studies of compositional discrimination in Hungarian volcanites, Scottish limestone, Russian cassiterite, and in an Italian volcanic fumarolic field, with other applications in studies canonical variate vector components and tertiary sandstone composition in an evaluation of the Dickinson model. Three papers evaluate software and several address general theory and methods, including simplicial geometry, using exploratory compositional data analysis, determining frequency distributions and natural laws in geochemistry, using practical aspects of rounded zeros, and understanding topological concepts. Since Karl Pearson wrote his paper on spurious correlation in 1897, a lot has been said about the statistical analysis of compositional data, mainly by geologists such as Felix Chayes. The solution appeared in the 1980s, when John Aitchison proposed to use logratios. Since then, the approach has seen a great expansion, mainly building on the idea of the 'natural geometry' of the sample space. Statistics is expected to give sense to our perception of the natural scale of the data, and this is made possible for compositional data using logratios.
