It gives the words that people find difficult to spell because, when moving from speaking to writing, a sound in the word can cause difficulty. The book is comprehensive and useful for those who find spelling easy or difficult. The first part of the book is an alphabetical list of words containing spelling difficulties with the difficult letter combination in bold. Each word has a reference to a rule or explanation. In the second half of the book the words are grouped under the relevant rule or explanation. The rules and explanations range from simple vowel sounds for beginners to the complicated question of hyphens and all give a full and concise treatment of the subject with a practically comprehensive list of examples.
The book links how to say a word with how to spell it, and can also serve as a guide for the reverse process, moving from spelling to pronunciation. The main difficulties in learning to read and pronounce words are neatly categorized in the spelling rules with all the words listed. Teachers of Infants and Juniors, those in special education and anyone concerned with dyslexia will find a wealth of material and examples for teaching difficulties encountered in learning to read as well as spell.
