Synopsis

This collection of essays is the first of its kind to focus on issues concerning sculpture and reproduction, and to explore their theoretical and practical consequences. What does it mean for a sculpture to be reproduced? Does it diminish or add to the authenticity and authority of the original? Ranging from the Ancient to the Modern world, and investigating the function of artistic reproduction in cultures as diverse as the Catholic Spain of the Golden Age and the avant-garde of early twentieth century Germany, these essays significantly add to our understanding of a number of major sculptors, including Michelangelo, Rodin and Brancusi.
