Review

With the introduction of ADO 2.0, Microsoft added a myriad of new features to help the application developer get the most from code required to interact with external data sources.

In the ADO 2.0 Programmers Reference, authors David Sussman and Alex Homer provide a handy guide to this most useful of Windows development tools in a way which is both brief and informative.

Commands old and new are laid out in a style reminiscent of the O'Reilly ... In A Nutshell series providing explanations which are to the point, examples which are easy to understand and ever- helpful look-up tables of parameters and sub-options.

In addition, pointers are given for using the command set with development packages including Visual C++, Visual J++, Visual Basic and ASP. A thorough search of the book reveals the vast majority of the examples presented in Visual Basic--fine if you're au fait with conversion to other languages but a bit of a nuisance if you happen to be looking for a quick and easy code segment for one of VB's stablemates.

Coverage of the basics of ADO 2.0 make this book a great reference for users of all abilities, but with the additional coverage of topics including XML data remoting, the creation of Internet- friendly applications and the all-new Data Shaping (recordsets within recordsets) technology, it is an invaluable addition to the expert's bookshelf.
