Windows CE is the version of Windows that is developed specifically for handheld PCs and other small devices. The first version of CE was produced in late 1996, and has had moderate success in the palmtop market. The new version, CE2, is due out in Q197, and will add a wealth of new features. This improvement, coupled with the gathering momentum of the palmtop market, mean that 1998 will be year when CE becomes a mainstream operating system for developers. VB for CE is a new product that will for the first time allow application developers to build custom CE applications quickly and effectively.

The market for handheld PC applications is poised for massive growth. More than 40% of all jobs in the developed economies of the world don't involve sitting at a desk, and all these workers are now poised to benefit from custom information served up in the palm of their hands. What's been holding all palmtops back has been the complexity and outright lack of development tools to build these applications. VB for CE meets that need. It will allow existing VB programmers to add CE clients to their applications and databases. The book assumes that the main audience will already be VB proficient and cuts right to the chase.
