Synopsis

Significant numbers of physicists began working in association with hospitals following the discovery of X-Rays and radioactivity in the late 1890s. This book introduces the reader to medical radiation physics using the developments from the early days as a means of explaining the underlying science. The first chapter provides basic information on x-rays and radioactivity. This is followed by their diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Recent developments involving non-ionising ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiations, and the use of lasers are covered in the following chapters. The last part explains the use of ultrasound and magnetic fields.

Review

"The text is easy and enjoyable to read and clearly laid out ... the book is a useful addition to the general medical physics texts and would be suitable for most departmental libraries." SCOPE, 2000 "It is a splendid follow-up read after studying the more formal presentations in A-level textbooks ... To any student studying modules on Medical Physics, this text will augment the scene, and will provide inspiration to those considering a Hospital Physics career." Physics Education, 2000 "This book by Angela Newing is a fascinating introduction to the history of medical physics and to its modern developments. It is written in an accessible style, and no prior knowledge of either physics or medicine is required ... at GBP20 the cost is modest. Do buy it." The British Journal of Radiology, 2001
