James Fyfield, a young boy with an enquiring, scientific mind, takes up a very unusual hobby - he amuses himself by making deadly poisons in his mother's kitchen. Soon he has a large collection of jars tucked away on the top shelf in his bedroom - hemlock, henbane and deadly-nightshade. But the one of which he is proudest is a murky brown concoction, painstakingly prepared from the spiky fruit of the lethal thornapple.
