An enchanting big dog in a small dog's package, the Lhasa Apso ranks amongst the wonders of Tibet. Adored by his owners for an assertive, gay temperament and his long, luxurious coat, the Lhasa Apso thrives in many living situations, proving to be the most adaptable of canine companions.

The Lhasa Apso, famous for its glorious coat and exotic origins, has adapted well to become a popular and rewarding pet, and this superbly illustrated guide is an indispensable handbook for the caring owner. Learn all about the breed's origins, choosing a puppy, grooming, training and caring for your dog. Author Juliette Cunliffe has owned Lhasa Apsos for many years. An International Championship Show judge, she has travelled extensively to research the breed in its homeland of Tibet.
The Lhasa Apso is a hardy, small, long-coated dog which comes from the mountainous terrain of Tibet, 'The Roof of the World' as it is often known. It is likely that the breed existed as long ago as 800 years before the birth of Christ, but it is difficult to substantiate any claims prior to 639 AD, for that is when written records of Tibet began. It seems that the Lhasa Apso descended from European herding dogs, including Hungary's Puli and Pumi, but more recognisable to the casual observer is its connection with two other Tibetan breeds, the Tibetan Spaniel and the Tibetan Terrier, and also its Sino-Tibetan cousin, the Shih Tzu. Another close relation is the Damci of the nearby Kingdom of Bhutan.
The Lhasa Apso was kept in monasteries and barked a warning to the monks if intruders managed to get past the large Tibetan Mastiffs tethered outside. Not kept exclusively in monasteries, it was however considered something of a talisman dog, never sold but given only as a gift. His Holiness the Dalai Lama had a custom of presenting Lhasa Apsos to imperial families throughout the Manchu Dynasty (1583-1908), as these dogs were considered bringers of good fortune. So valued were Lhasa Apsos, they had to be guarded in Tibet as it was recognised that really good ones might be a target for thieves.
