Three-dimensional Christianity
As a fellow human, I have more that an author’s sympathy for Peter Green, the hero of this book. To some extent perhaps, he is my alter-ego, one whose weakness I recognise because they are so embarrassingly familiar, and one whose eventual strength I aspire to.
It would surprise me if I am alone in this. The world - the western world in particular- is full of Christians living two-dimensionally, who feel that a third dimension is surly to be found somewhere. Within that simple frame work, spiritual mountains are certainly visible, yet only as a background, sometimes stark sometimes faint, an outline cut out from a piece of cardboard. Any impulse to probe the reality behind the outline is a step toward three-dimensional Christianity-a first step, admittedly, but a step that has to be taken. Once taken, the journey continues indefinitely. It winds unexpectedly, is replete with surprise, and over a lifetime, gives shape to our spiritual geography.
Early Christians operated three-dimensionally. That is, they knew their mountains, lived among them, and were scrupulously subject to the lord of the Mountains. They faced challenges, ran risks, and discovered by experience that the Lord of the Mountains had not only a very specific purpose for them, but resources to male all obstacles serve it. That clear perspective saved them from pursuing agendas of their own.
Here then, I live vicariously. Peter Green explores and ponders much that lies beyond my reach. Some of his thoughts I share profoundly; some more tentatively; some, perhaps, are the stuff of dreams. But as to his goal, the image of Christ, let there be no ambiguity. That, as the bible itself declares, is God’s purpose for all of us.
