Synopsis

RANGERS is an elite football club, one of a cherished company that might include Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool, and abroad Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the great Milan clubs. Yet none of these famous clubs has dominated its domestic game as has Rangers in Scotland, with its 46 League championships, 26 Scot tish Cup and 19 League Cup victories. Indeed, it can be argued that there is no club quite like it in the world - it is part of the culture of Scotland as much as the Church of Scotland, the unique Scottish legal system and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrew's. Rangers, it has been said, represents the Pro testant, Unionist, Masonic ethic, and is sustained by a huge and sophisticated supporters' organis ation, with branches throughout Scotland, in England and Northern Ireland, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, wherever there are Scots in numbers. Since the club's formation in 1872, more Rangers players have been selected to play for Scotland, more have captained Scotland, than those of any other club. Off the field, the success and self confidence of the management has been evident in the development of its ground at Ibrox. In 1929, a main stand was opened with 10,000 seats and an enclosure for 9,000. It was one of the wonders of the age and its facade remains a listed building. In the mid-1970s, long before the Taylor Report, the transformation of the stadium began. Now it is a dramatic, mod ern stadium, lavishly equipped, with more than 45,000 seats. In Rangers: The Complete Record, many of the great ones, players and managers, take their place in this roll of honour. And every match and result, from the beginning, is listed here in a perm anent and incomparable record of one of football's greatest clubs.
