This course takes students step by step through the process of producing an extended piece of academic writing. It teaches the writing and research skills necessary for such a task, as well as developing essential oral skills for participating in tutorials or seminars and presentations. The approach taken encourages students to work independently, supported by the provision of detailed advice and model answers, as well as web-based material for independent study. Students use authentic source materials to produce a piece of extended writing. Areas covered include: research - finding information effectively planning use of evidence to support ideas acknowledgment of sources avoiding plagiarism introductions and conclusions development of content definitions incorporation of data and illustrations time management preparation for oral presentations The design of the material is based on work carried out on pre-sessional courses at the University of Reading's Centre for Applied Language Studies over a number of years. It is supported by a review of current research into EAP methodology, and reflects the most recent developments in language teaching for academic purposes.
