Korea: Caught in Time tells the story of Korea first opening up to the world, favoring a policy of strict isolationism through much of existence. These early photographs focusing on the twilight of the nineteenth century as Japan joined the western world in opening it for trade. About the Author
Terry Bennett is a specialist in early photography of the Far East, with an expert knowledge of the photographic pioneers who first explored the world in the late nineteenth century. He is the author of Early Japanese Images, co-author of Japan: Caught in Time and has lectured and published many articles on related topics.

Photographs of Korea beginning in 1871 with the squadron of five ships which landed that year in an attempt to open Korea to trade. Other early photographs included royal portraits taken in the 1890's. Queen Min, the last queen of Korea, was assassinated by the Japanese in 1895 and the striking image presented here is the only known photograph of her.
