The apparent complexity of the engine bay of a modern car, with its hoses, sensors, wires and computer modules, suggests that to remove or render inoperative all of the pollution controls is bound to enhance performance. In point of fact, nothing is further from the truth. By gaining a basic understanding of how the main components function it is possible to make a number of tuning decisions involving sensible, workable engine modifications that will show how much performance potential is built in to today's engines. The author has endeavoured to keep this book as non-technical as possible and eliminate information which would apply primarily to race and rally engine development, having covered this ground in great detail in his book Four-Stroke Performance Tuning also published by Haynes Publishing. As in this previous title he is able to convey the various ways in which a modern engine can be modified with beneficial results in an easy to undertand manner based on his own practical involvement.
A. Graham Bell's interest in modifying engines stemmed from his love of fast driving. As he couldn't afford a Porsche 911s he had to resort to hotting up a Ford 105E Anglia to give 911-type performance. The research involved and the practical experience gained led to further involvement with racing cars and raing engine workshops, learning all the time. It was then but a short step to start building engines for other people's race, rally and road cars. The book represents the author's experience gained from working on engines of all kinds for over 30 years, during which time he has unravelled the mysteries surrounding cylinder head design and turbo-charging and gained an understanding of the ways in which manufacturers are dealing with the complexities of performance, emissions and economy.
