This report summarises the current guidance from the Department of Education and Skills on school-based random drug testing and considers the evidence, ethics and practicalities of such testing. Drawing on evidence from the United States, where drug testing in schools is commonplace, the report examines the complex ethical and practical issues associated with testing, including: young people's rights; the dangers of labelling pupils as drug users; the validity of test results; and the possible adverse impact of random drug testing on young people's educational experience. The author argues that a move towards random drug testing in UK schools should be resisted until clearer evidence has emerged as to the impact of such programmes.
