Review

The Official book of the World Cup 1999 (in association with ITV Sport) is well constructed and comprehensive, helped by numerous action photographs. Its coverage includes previous World Cups and the planning for the 1999 competition.

The book begins with a two- page introduction on behalf of ITV, explaining their programme schedules and details of presenters and commentators involved in the station's coverage. This is followed by a review of the fate of the more "lightweight" countries in qualifying matches and the progress of the more successful competitors.

Venues, fixtures and match schedules complete with dates and times of kick-off are all included, but the highlight is an alphabetical list of the competing teams, followed by an in-depth report on their key players.

Finally, a section on the history of the World Cup since its conception in 1987 (including all finalists and winners) rounds the book off excellently.

In his foreword, Leo Williams states: "This is a book for both the rugby expert and the armchair supporter, providing the former with an informative view and the latter with an entertaining read." Though this is accurate, the younger supporter may find this is a publication aimed more at the mature fan. --Peter Kidd
