Synopsis
Meditation is a fast-growing pursuit in the West. At the same time, more and more people who feel that Western religion has lost its relevance are turning to Buddhism. This volume provides an introduction to meditation, written in terms of the Vipassana Buddhist tradition of Thailand. It describes the true Theravada (insight) meditation practice, with its emphasis on awareness, both of thoughts and of the body. The book provides a short, practical course for the individual to follow at home or for a group to do together. It is intended for those who want a simple structure to meditation. It should also appeal to readers who have a curiosity about Buddhism, but are not ready for a full commitment to following its complex practices.
