Synopsis

Knowledge and knowledge management have become buzz words of the 1990s; the subject of much discussion and promoted as key competitive tools. But just what is knowledge, how does it differ from "know-how", and how can you harness the potential benefits of managing this resource in your organization? This book reveals the connections between knowledge and know-how, and explains how know-how alone is no longer enough to sustain organizations. Packed with real life case studies, the text explains definitions in tangible terms, and illustrates and informs the way to successful implementation of knowledge management.

From the Author

You cannot manage knowledge. You can manage its processes.
Haven't you ever marvelled at the astonishing number of business and management books that announce themselves as 'The Answer!'? Some distinguished chairman or CEO tells you, "If you read only one management book this year, make this the one." This book was inspired in part by my curiosity about the whole business guru phenomenom. Is knowledge management going to be turned into another short-lived guru solution? Another quick buck marketing gimmick? I surely hope not. I keep meeting managers and academics who have answers to sell - 'one size fits all' solutions for every situation. For what it is worth, "From Know-how to Knowledge" is my cry against the whole idea that anyone could write a book with a recipe that solves our knowledge management problems for us. Surely, if it were that easy, management would be a piece of cake by now! I wanted to write a book that is about knowledge processes the way they really are. No two companies can have the same solution, because there is no single definition of what knowledge is and there is no way to copy accurately someone else's knowledge processes. At the same time, knowledge management is the future. Its what makes E-business possible and, in more and more situations, necessary. You have to learn what KM is and then you have to find a way to do it in your organization in a way that works for you. If copying somebody else was an option, I guess we would all be doing it that way by now and there would be no reason to write or read my book.
