Of all the things you don't want to be doing come the twelfth chime on December 31st 1999, it's staggering along an empty street, warm bottle in hand, rain gushing down, and wondering where the party is. If this is your idea of millennium paranoia, then this pocket bible should help you see the light. It cruises around the world in 300 dinky pages, detailing exactly which country is doing what throughout the year 2000. Great to dip into and, as with most of the Rough Guide series, designed with idiots like this reviewer in mind: easy to use, endless nuggets of interesting background information and, most importantly, all the essential details you need on where to celebrate at party hot spots across the globe. So, if you want to fork out fifteen grand freezing your way to Antarctica or place a message in the Robert Louis Stevenson time capsule by popping along to Samoa, the guide tells you how. Closer to home, there's an extensive section on all parts of the UK, with enough exciting events listed to tweak the corners of even the most hardened cynic's mouth upwards. This is more than just a travel guide, however. It's a synthesis of all things millennial, including a witty FAQ section, a good directory of related Web sites and a wonderful history of end-of-the-world cults throughout the ages thrown in for good measure.

If you can't see what all the fuss is about, then this is a must buy. There are enough ideas in here of things to do to fill your days for the next thousand years. Unfortunately, longevity treatment isn't one of them. --Jim Rickards
