Synopsis

The Musée Rodin celebrates the art of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), the most innovative sculptor of the French Romantic School whose most popular works include The Age of Bronze, The Kiss and The Thinker.

This highly illustrated book is based on the museum's collection which is housed in the Hôtel Biron in Paris, where the artist lived and worked in the last years of his life. The many facets of Rodin's art, which expanded beyond sculpture to thousands of works in plaster, photographs and drawings, are included. The museum also houses the artist's own extraordinary art collection, which includes many of the Greco-Roman antiquities that were his inspiration. He also collected and exchanged works by his contemporaries, the Impressionists: Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh.

In 1916, when Rodin was in his seventies, he donated all the works in his possession to the French nation. This book, like the museum, provides a unique and intimate view of one of France's most independently minded modern sculptors.
