Documents describe him as 'famous throughout Italy' and Vasari maintained that Signorelli had 'with his profound mastery of design, particularly of nudes, and with his grace in invention and the composition of his scenes, opened the way. to the final perfection of art' for the next generation of artists. Signorelli was not forgotten in subsequent centuries and in the nineteenth century his art was enthusiastically collected by British collectors. He has, however, been neglected in the late twentieth century. Signorelli was born in Cortona in southern Tuscany. His father and grandfather seem to have been painters, but Signorelli's most important early training was received in the workshop of Piero della Francesca (c.1415/20-1492) in the mid-1460s.
