This is the ultimate materials engineering text and resource for students developing skills and understanding of materials properties and selection for engineering applications. Written by world class authors, it takes a unique design led-approach which is broader in scope than other texts, thereby meeting the curriculum needs of a wide variety of courses in the materials and design field, from Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering to Engineering Materials, Materials Processing and Materials in Design. This new edition retains its design-led focus and strong emphasis on visual communication while expanding its treatment of crystallography and phase diagrams and transformations to fully meet the needs of instructors teaching a first-year course in materials. Additional teaching resources have been added, including an interactive online materials science tutorial and online testing and assessment program with algorithmic exercises that allow one question template to become hundreds of different questions. The book is fully linked with the leading materials software package as used in over 600 academic institutions worldwide as well as numerous government and commercial engineering departments.

* A complete introductory materials science & engineering text: unique design-led approach is broader in scope than other texts, thereby meeting the curriculum needs of a wide variety of courses in the materials and design field, from introduction to materials science and engineering, to engineering materials, materials selection and processing, and materials in design.

* Unbeatable author team: Prof Mike Ashby, the world's leading materials selection innovator & author of four other best-selling materials engineering texts; Dr David Cebon, MD of Granta Design, the leading material properties software house; & Dr Hugh Shercliff, head of materials science teaching at the University of Cambridge, UK

* New to this edition: Expanded treatment of microstructure, crystallography, phase diagrams and transformations, and corrosion, to fully meet the needs of instructors teaching a first course in materials. Additional worked examples and end-of-chapter problems. Expanded offering of ancillary material, including interactive online materials science tutorial and available online testing and self-assessment program featuring 100+ online problems.

Review:

Professor Mike Ashby is well known for producing readily understandable materials education texts, and for the innovative use of graphical representation for material properties. This book, now in its second edition, is no exception and explains materials engineering from a design-led approach, as opposed to the more traditional science-led approach.

...

Useful for reinforcing student learning is the inclusion of over 50 new worked examples, distributed throughout the book. Completely new are the self-contained Guided Learning Units or sections at the end of the book on crystallography, and phase diagrams and phase transformations, including exercises (and unlike the rest of the book with answers). There are also useful links to interactive ‘online’ tutorials and assessment, reinforcing the strong selfteaching aspects of the book.

...

[T]he book is aimed primarily at students and teachers of materials science and engineering, although engineering practitioners involved with materials and their selection will also find the extensive use of applications both useful and relevant.

-Engineering Designer, (Reviewed by Professor Kevin Edwards)

From the Back Cover:

This is the essential materials engineering text and resource for students developing skills and understanding of materials properties and selection for engineering applications. Taking a unique design- led approach that is broader in scope than other texts, Materials 2e meets the curriculum needs of a wide variety of courses in the materials and design field, including introduction to materials science and engineering, engineering materials, materials selection and processing, and materials in design. This new edition retains its design-led focus and strong emphasis on visual communication while expanding its treatment of crystallography and phase diagrams by use of "Guided Learning" sections to fully meet the needs of instructors teaching an introductory course in materials. KEY FEATURES:

* Design-led approach motivates and engages students in the study of materials science and engineering through real-life case studies and illustrative applications

* Highly visual full color graphics facilitate understanding of materials concepts and properties

* Chapters on materials selection and design are integrated with chapters on materials fundamentals, enabling students to see how specific fundamentals can be important to the design process

* For instructors, a solutions manual, lecture slides, online image bank and materials selection charts for use in class handouts or lecture presentations are available at http://textbooks.elsevier.com

* Links with the Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES EduPack), the powerful materials selection software. See www.grantadesign.com for information

NEW TO THIS EDITION:
