As a result of the Hungerford shooting tragedy this report, which was commissioned by the then Office of Arts and Libraries, examines the reactions of ten public library authorities to a civil disaster within their own area. Although it concluded that a national approach to the role of librarians working with the local authorities would be inappropriate, it made a number of recommendations for Chief Librarians and their staff. The extended interviews provide case studies of the contributions that library services can make in communities coming to terms with the trauma of civil disaster.
