From the Publisher

A stunning visual encyclopedia of the Second World War.
Encyclopedias are concerned primarily with the facts, and this visual encyclopedia of World War II is faithful to the norm. It includes detailed descriptions of every major weapon and weapons system used by the combatants on both sides throughout the war: ships and ship classes, aircraft, tanks, and armored vehicles, artillery pieces, and small arms. It provides hundreds of concise biographies of the leaders and notables of the war, civilian and military. It recounts, in outline, the major campaigns and battles on every front and relates the outcome of one to another.

But it attempts more than the provision of fact. The biographies have been so written and the campaign and battle entries so constucted as to provide a continuous and explicative narrative of the war from its outbreak to its close. It offers a reasoned analysis of the motives and expectations that underlay the grand strategy of the combatants, and a rationale of the failure or success which their strategies brought. It is, in short, a complete, many-sided history of the war as a whole, arranged in encyclopedic form and, in that respect, an entirely original undertaking.
